Ronaldo scores twice on second Man Utd debut – 12 years after his last goal for Red Devils

The Portuguese gave the Old Trafford faithful what they had come to see by finding the target twice against Newcastle as the hosts ran out 4-1

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals on his second debut for Manchester United, helping the Red Devils to a 4-1 win over Newcastle.

It looked like it would be a frustrating opening 45 minutes for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner against Newcastle, but Old Trafford erupted in stoppage-time when the deadlock was finally broken.

The Portuguese would go on to score a second to put United 2-1 ahead

How did Ronaldo’s first goal come about?

The 36-year-old, who was handed a started berth by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, took a while to get his eye back in after 12 years away from a Premier League stage.

A couple of half-chances passed him by early on, with one wild swing with his left foot drawing ironic cheers and a knowing smile from United’s No.7.

He was, however, to show in the closing stages of the first half that he has lost none of his touch in front of goal.

Mason Greenwood drifted inside off the right flank and hit a hopeful shot that took the slightest of deflections.

That was enough to put Newcastle keeper Freddie Woodman off and he could only spill the ball to the feet of Ronaldo, who reacted quickest inside the six-yard box for a tap-in.

When was Ronaldo’s last Premier League goal before Newcastle double?

Ronaldo hit 84 Premier League goals for United during his first stint with the club.

The last of those came in a derby date with Manchester City on May 10, 2009.

Some 12 years later and an all-time great is back in the groove, with Newcastle unable to contain his very obvious threat.

They did restore parity in the 56th minute through Javier Manquillo, but they were not level for long. With Solskjaer’s side looking for a hero to step up on a day that a wave of optimism poured down from the stands, Ronaldo was – as is often the case – the man to step up.

He was given another helping hand by Woodman when grabbing his second of the game in the 62nd minute, but he and the rest of his team-mates cared little about that.

Ronaldo was sent racing through on goal by Luke Shaw, with a perfectly weighted pass taking him into the area.

He got his head down and fired goalwards with his left boot, with the ball slipping between Woodman’s legs and into the back of the net.

Messi breaks Pele’s goalscoring record after hat trick for Argentina

The 34-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward has now scored 79 goals for Argentina.

Lionel Messi has added another record to his long list of milestone achievements after scoring a hat trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Bolivia in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday.

The treble by Messi sees him overtake Pele as the top international goalscorer in South American football history. The goals scored by Messi in Thursday night’s tie were his 77th, 78th and 79th international goals respectively.

Aside from adding to his goal-scoring records, Messi’s efforts have also helped keep Argentina firmly on course for a place at next year’s World Cup finals in Qatar.

The win leaves the two-time World Cup winners second in South America’s overall qualifying standings with 18 points from eight games.

Thursday’s outing was Messi’s 153rd appearance for Argentina and the 34-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward was quick to show his intentions.

Messi caught up with Pele on 77 goals when he fired his team into the lead in the 14th minute; nutmegging a defender and then curling a sublime shot past Bolivia goalkeeper Carlos Lampe.

Argentina’s captain, Messi then moved one clear of Pele in the 64th minute with his second of the night before he completed the seventh international hat-trick of his career two minutes from time.

While Messi is now king in South America, he is still way behind his fierce rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the outright record for goals scored in men’s international football with 111 goals from 180 games.

World Cup Qualifiers: Iheanacho shoots Super Eagles to victory over Liberia

Next for the Super Eagles is an away game against Cape Verde.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign on a bright note as they secured a 2-0 win Friday night against the Lone Stars of Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Two first-half goals by Kelechi Iheanacho saw the Super Eagles soaring to the top of their qualifying group that includes Cape Verde and the Central Africa Republic.

Iheanacho’s goals were scored in the 22nd and 45th.

Though ranked more than 100 places below Nigeria in the monthly FIFA Rankings, the Liberians started the game on a confident note; matching everything thrown at them by the Super Eagles.

But as the game progressed, the Super Eagles began to make in-roads for an opening goal.

Ola Aina attempted a shot from range in the 10th minute, but the attempt by the Torino defender went off target.

The Super Eagles almost took the lead moments after, but Joe Aribo failed to hit the target after he was nicely set up by Alex Iwobi.

The opening goal finally came for Nigeria in the 22nd minute when Iheanacho drilled a low shot past the Liberia goalkeeper following an assist from Iwobi.

Aribo could have doubled Nigeria’s lead afterwards but his shot from close range was fiercely blocked by a Liberia defender.

Just before the halftime whistle was sounded, Iheanacho scored his second of the game.

‘Senior man,’ as he is fondly called, scored with a cool finish as he controlled a high ball right inside the six-yard box before he turned sharply to fire past goalkeeper Ashley Williams.

The Super Eagles continued with the pressure after the break but they could not add to their tally.

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr made double substitutions in the 77th minute with Paul Onuachu and Samuel Kalu replacing Osimhen and Moses Simon.

Captain Ahmed Musa and Shehu Abdullahi were also introduced in place of Iheanacho and Iwobi respectively.

Oghenekaro Etebo also took the place of Aribo late on in the game but none could change the final outcome.

While the players from the United Kingdom will fly back to base after Friday’s tie, the rest will be travelling to the island of Mindelo on Sunday night for Tuesday’s clash with the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in a Day 2 encounter.

Before this latest game, in 17 previous clashes with Liberia’s Lone Star, the Super Eagles had won 10 matches, drawing three and losing four.

Nigeria is seeking a seventh appearance at the World Cup having featured in all but one of the editions since making a debut appearance at the 1994 edition in the United States.

Spanish international, Ansu Fati, has been handed Lionel Messi’s number 10 shirt at Barcelona.

Barcelona: Ansu Fati Handed Lionel Messi’s No 10 Shirt

Messi left Barcelona in early August to join Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract. The Argentine International joined the French club on a deal worth £25m per year after tax, plus bonuses.

Messi’s shirt number has since become vacant at Barcelona and midfielder, Pedri had been tipped to take on the huge responsibility.

However, Spanish club handed Fati the iconic jersey number.

The statement on the club’s website read: “Despite being just 18 years of age and still recovering from injury, Ansu Fati forms part of Barca’s history as a record breaker and also with the Spanish national side.

‘Since his debut in August 2019, the youngster has set records in the league and Champions League.

‘Just six days after his debut for the first team he became the youngest ever player to score in the league for FC Barcelona. He is a record breaker who will now wear the magical No 10 shirt.’

Fati is currently recovering from injury and is easing his way back in having spent nine months on the sidelines. He sustained a serious knee injury in a match against Real Betis back in November 2020.

Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the No 7 shirt again at Manchester United after the club was granted dispensation by the Premier League to allocate him the number.

Ronaldo re-signed for United on Deadline Day from Juventus on a two-year contract, with the option to extend for another year.

The Portuguese forward famously wore the No 7 shirt in his first spell at United, but there were concerns he may not have been able to wear that number this season with Edinson Cavani occupying the jersey.

However, with the departure of Daniel James to Leeds on Deadline Day, United have been given permission by the Premier League for Cavani to take James’ vacant No 21 shirt, with Ronaldo reclaiming the No 7 shirt from Cavani.

Ronaldo said: “I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to have the number seven shirt again. So I would like to say a huge thank you to Edi (Cavani) for this incredible gesture.”null

United’s announcement came hours after Ronaldo was released early from the Portugal squad after picking up a suspension.null

The 36-year-old scored a world record 110th international goal as he fired Portugal to a dramatic victory over the Republic of Ireland in Wednesday’s World Cup Qualifier.

Ronaldo’s record goal cancelled out John Egan’s opener with just a minute remaining at the Estadio Algarve, and he then completed the job with his 111th in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 win.

But after removing his shirt in celebration he was cautioned by Slovenian referee Matej Jug and, having been booked earlier in the campaign, is suspended for Tuesday night’s trip to Azerbaijan.

A statement on the Portuguese Football Federation’s official website said: “Cristiano Ronaldo was excused from the stage of the national team this Thursday.

“The yellow card seen against Ireland, being the second in this stage of qualification, forces him to fulfil an official game of suspension, which will happen against Azerbaijan.”

Ronaldo’s release means he will also miss Saturday’s friendly against World Cup hosts Qatar in Hungary, although there is no indication as yet as to when he will join up with United.

Ronaldo: I’m so happy to be home

Ronaldo has expressed his delight to be back “home” at United and is hungry to create more history with the club.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s return to Old Trafford was made official on Tuesday morning, as he signed a two-year deal with the option to extend for a further year.

Ronaldo scored a total of 551 club goals across spells at Real Madrid and Juventus after leaving United in 2009, and in an interview with the club, the 36-year-old said it is now the right moment for him to return.

Ronaldo told the official Manchester United website: “I have a fantastic history with this amazing club. I was there at 18 years old and of course I’m so happy to be back home after 12 years. So I’m really glad and looking forward to starting my first game.

“I think it’s the best decision that I have made. It’s right on point in my opinion.

“I moved from Juve now to Manchester, it’s a new chapter, I’m so happy and glad, and I want to carry on again, to make history, to try to help Manchester achieve great results, to win trophies and number one of them, to win great things.”

Cristiano Ronaldo breaks men’s international scoring record with 110th and 111th goals

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 28 headers for Portugal, including his two against the Irish

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the world record for goals scored in men’s international football as he hit his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal in their dramatic 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland.

The 36-year-old scored two late headers – to break and extend the record – after he had a penalty saved by Gavin Bazunu.

Ali Daei, who scored 109 goals for Iran between 1993 and 2006, held the record which Ronaldo equalled with a double against France at Euro 2020.

The Manchester United forward has also equalled Sergio Ramos’ European record for men’s caps – with his 180th Portugal appearance.

The world record – only ratified by Fifa this summer – is the 195 Malaysia caps won by Soh Chin Ann between 1969 and 1984.

Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventuson deadline day, and Daei are the only two male players to score 90 or more international goals.

“I’m so happy, not only because I beat the record, but for the special moment that we had,” he told RTE. “Two goals at the end of the game. I have to appreciate what the team did, we believed until the end. I’m so glad.”

This is the latest landmark to push the argument for the Portuguese to be considered an all-time great.

He is already the top scorer in club football’s top tournament, the European Cup/Champions League, a trophy he has won five times.

The former Real Madrid forward is also the top scorer in European Championship history (14) and in Euros and World Cups combined (21).
