Koeman: I’d prefer to have Messi, but Barcelona collective must now shine

The Dutchman is optimistic for the club’s future, despite losing the six-time Ballon d’Or winner

Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman admitted that he would prefer to have Lionel Messi still in his ranks, but he believes that his team’s collective can now come to the fore.

Messi completed a move to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week following weeks of speculation over his future. Ultimately, he departed when it became evident that the Catalans could not afford to retain him.

The post-Messi era at Barcelona started promisingly, though, with Camp Nou witnessing a 4-2 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday in which Martin Braithwaite struck twice.

What was said?

Speaking to the media following the victory, Koeman said: “I think our game can be more collective than before, but I’d prefer to have Messi in my team. But if we don’t have the player, it has to be the collective.”

Koeman was asked about several individuals who impressed, and he picked out Memphis Depay, who will be expected to shoulder much of the burden that Messi has left, as an impressive performer.

“He played a great game and he gave a great assist. He’s always doing things,” he said of his compatriot before turning his attention to Braithwate.

“He’s an example of a professional,” Koeman said of the Danish forward. “He always works for the team and has improved his game. He has speed and is difficult to stop. I’m delighted to have a player like him.”

Finally, he offered praise to Gerard Pique, who took a pay cut to allow Memphis and Garcia to be registered for this match.

“He was the leader last year but this season he is better physically,” Koeman said. “His attitude has been exemplary, like that of the other veterans.”

What’s next for Barca?

The Blaugrana are next in action on Saturday when they face Athletic Club in their second La Liga match of the season.

Koeman’s men then take on Getafe the following weekend.

Barcelona began the post-Lionel Messi era with an entertaining 4-2 home win over Real Sociedad in their first game of the La Liga season on Sunday.

A header from Gerard Pique gave the Catalans the lead in the 19th minute to the delight of 20,000 fans who returned to the Nou Camp for the first time in 17 months, and Martin Braithwaite struck either side of half-time to extend their lead.

Sociedad looked to be out of the game but substitute Julen Lobete pulled them back into contention in the 82nd minute and forward Mikel Oyarzabal scored a stunning free-kick moments later to set Barcelona nerves jangling.

Sergi Roberto struck in added time for the hosts, however, to make sure of the points in Barca’s first match without all-time top scorer Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain last week after 21 years with the Spanish club.

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has completed a medical ahead of joining Roma for £34m.

Talks progressed positively after Roma general manager Tiago Pinto met the striker in London on Thursday, and the Serie A side believe he will be a key part of boss Jose Mourinho’s plans.

Abraham is expected to sign a five-year contract worth £4m a year after tax.

Chelsea will have €80m buyback option on the 23-year-old, which can be triggered in the summer of 2023.

The arrival of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for a club-record £97.5m pushed the player further down the pecking order and all but ended the possibility of him staying in the Premier League.

Fellow Serie A side Atalanta and Arsenal also expressed an interest in Abraham, but Chelsea’s preference was always to sell him to a foreign club.

Bordeaux striker Samuel Kalu collapsed during their Ligue 1 match at Marseille on Sunday, before he was substituted after briefly returning to the pitch.

Kalu, 23, fell to the ground in the sixth minute as Dimitri Payet prepared to take a free-kick amid searing temperatures at the Stade Velodrome.

Players from both teams rushed to the Nigeria international and called for medical attention.

Kalu was able to get up and walk off the pitch with the help of his team-mates, holding an ice pack against his head.

He resumed playing several moments later but was then substituted in the 14th minute before the match finished in a 2-2 draw.

The cause of the incident is unclear, however it brought back memories of Christian Eriksen’s collapse at Euro 2020 in June when the Denmark midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen’s life was saved when CPR was administered to him on the pitch and his heart was re-started with a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital, where he recovered after undergoing heart surgery.

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Gerd Muller has died at the age of 75.

The striker scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany, including the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final as they defeated Netherlands 2-1 in Munich.

Affectionately known as ‘Der Bomber’, Muller originally joined Bayern in the summer of 1964 and won the Intercontinental Cup, three European Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as the Bundesliga and DFB Cup four times each.

Muller won the Golden Boot for netting 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup and scored a record 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga games and 66 goals in 74 European matches during his 15 years at Bayern.

He also held the record for the most goals in a calendar year after scoring 85 in 1972 until Lionel Messi surpassed his total in 2012.

Shortly before his 70th birthday in 2015, Bayern announced Muller had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and is survived by wife Uschi and daughter Nicole.null

His former club Bayern Munich revealed the news on their official Twitter account, saying: “Today the world of FC Bayern stands still.

“Gerd Muller was the greatest striker there has ever been – and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family.

“Without Gerd Muller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever.”

Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn added: “The news of Gerd Muller’s death deeply saddens us all.

“He’s one of the greatest legends in the history of FC Bayern, his achievements are unrivalled to this day and will forever be a part of the great history of FC Bayern and all of German football.

“As a player and a person, Gerd Muller stands for FC Bayern and its development into one of the biggest clubs in the world like no other. Gerd will forever be in our hearts.”
