Ligue 1: Lionel Messi gets rapturous reception as PSG beat Strasbourg

Pictorial: Messi meets PSG fans after first press conference

Lionel Messi got a first proper taste of his new home on Saturday as he was presented to a full stadium of Paris Saint-Germain fans before watching his team-mates beat Strasbourg 4-2 in Ligue 1 with Kylian Mbappe playing a starring role.

Messi received a rapturous reception as he ran out onto the pitch along with PSG’s other summer signings, with a 48,000-full house greeting the six-time Ballon d’Or winner despite the welcome ceremony taking place an hour before kick-off.

Messi joined fellow recruits Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi on a stage set up on the turf at the Parc des Princes, with the flashy presentation ceremony threatening to overshadow the match itself.

The Argentine later watched from the stands alongside Neymar and Angel di Maria — the trio not yet considered match-fit having enjoyed an extended break after playing at the Copa America — as Mauricio Pochettino’s team survived something of a scare to beat Strasbourg and make it two wins from two Ligue 1 matches this season.

They led 3-0 at half-time thanks to goals by Mauro Icardi and Julian Draxler either side of a Ludovic Ajorque own goal, but Kevin Gameiro and Ajorque netted after the interval to bring the visitors back into the contest.

However Pablo Sarabia made sure of the win late on after Strasbourg had been reduced to 10 men in the first match played before a full house at the Parc des Princes since before the Covid-19 pandemic struck in March last year.

– Mbappe jeered before kick-off –
Among the spectators were Formula One driver Pierre Gasly, French former Olympic judo champion Teddy Riner and NBA star Evan Fournier.

All wanted to get a glimpse of Messi, but the Argentine is not likely to make his Paris debut for another couple of weeks yet.

While Messi is the new idol of the PSG support, those fans jeered when Mbappe’s name was read out by the stadium announcer ahead of kick off.

The France striker is in the spotlight with speculation that he will seek a move away from PSG before the transfer window shuts — he has so far refused to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the campaign.

However, Mbappe played a key part in PSG’s victory, which looked a certainty from the moment Icardi headed in Abdou Diallo’s cross in the third minute.

The second goal arrived in the 25th minute when Mbappe’s shot went in via a cruel deflection off the face of Ajorque, and two minutes later it was Mbappe’s cross that was turned in at the back post by Draxler.

– Humiliation for champions Lille –
Nevertheless, former PSG striker Gameiro pulled one back for Strasbourg with a well-taken header not long after half-time, and giant frontman Ajorque then scored with a header of his own to make it 3-2.

Mbappe had come close in between those goals and PSG were sweating before their opponents had defender Alexander Djiku sent off nine minutes from time when a foul on Icardi earned him a second booking.

PSG then secured a 4-2 win with four minutes left when Mbappe burst towards the byline and cut the ball back for substitute Sarabia to convert.

Earlier Lille — who defied expectations to pip PSG to the title last season — suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at home to Nice, whose coach Christophe Galtier joined in the summer from the champions.

Galtier oversaw Lille’s remarkable title triumph in May but then ended his three-and-a-half-year association with the club and headed south to take charge of an ambitious Nice outfit owned by Ineos, the group chaired by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe.

Denmark striker Kasper Dolberg bagged a brace for Nice, his goals coming either side of a Hicham Boudaoui strike and a penalty converted by Amine Gouiri.

Angel Di Maria: Aguero wants to kill himself at Barcelona.

Paris Saint-Germainwinger Angel Di Maria has admitted that Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero is feeling very down after the departure of Lionel Messi, who was a big reason behind him joining the Blaugrana this summer.

The last week has seen Messi‘s departure at Barcelona become official before he joined Di Maria at PSG, which leaves Aguero without one of his closest friends and clearly questioning his move to Barcelona.

Kun wants to kill himself, what can you do,” Di Maria said with a laugh during an interview with TyC Sports.

“Apart from all that [Messi leaving Barcelona], the worst thing is that he got injured again and will be out for several weeks. That’s the saddest thing.”

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo is another player that was linked with a switch to PSG earlier in the summer, with reports now claiming that he could join on a free in 2022, and Di Maria thinks he will have regrets about not being able to play his football at the Parc des Princes not football.

Cristiano must want to kill himself for not being here [at PSG],” he noted.

“The quality and quantity of players that PSG have now is unique. It doesn’t often happen at clubs and the great players always want to be with the best.

Cristiano surely wants to be here, but they brought Messi and luckily he’s much better.”

Messi and Di Maria are good friends, and the latter waxed lyrical when asked about the 34-year-old’s talent.

“For me, honestly it’s very easy to play with him [Messi]. If you run, he passes the ball to you and it falls at your feet,” he explained.

“There are no excuses for anything. I have an excellent relationship with him on and off the pitch. It’s easy to see what he wants.

Messi is from another world. You kick a stone at him and he stops it, he passes you like it’s nothing, he thinks before the other guy. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“I played with Cristiano, Neymar, [Kylian] Mbappe, [Wayne] Rooney, [Robin] Van Persie, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, [Karim] Benzema, [Gareth] Bale and honestly I’ve never seen anything like it. He’s unique, Leo.MÁS EN MARCADonnarumma: “Si llega Messi, seré muy feliz”MarcaNadal sobre la marcha de Messi: “Es una noticia triste para los que amamos el fútbol”Marca

“I think Messi will feel better here than in Catalonia. With the reception he received in Paris, I think he already realised what he brings, what he does and what he is.

“The people here are going to show him that in every training session and in every game. Because of him there are now 200 people outside every time we go out.”

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has been talking about how his team will cope without Lionel Messi and admits the Catalan giants will find it harder to score goals.

The Dutchman made it clear how surprised and disappointed he was by the Argentine’s shock exit and added, “Messi meant so much for this club.”

Koeman then went on to look ahead to the new campaign and what he is expecting from his players as they adjust to life without the GOAT.

“We have new players in and we have to move forward and we have time for that. We have young players in the squad this season and it’s also for the future, we are working on the future of this club and it’s really important to have our focus on this and not focus on what happened in the last few days.

“Of course we will have more difficulties to score goals, Messi scored 30 goals last season. So other players need to bring more and take the next step and it’s more about the team now than individual players.

“It’s not always one player, you have to do it together. Hopefully, we get players back from injury like Ansu Fati and Coutinho and then we still have a strong squad. We will work harder, we will do more to achieve what people expect from us.

“We are still in the transition. We have to understand that the start of this season is difficult. We still have COVID, for all the clubs, but still we have players with injuries so we cannot put all the players for playing because we are still missing good players. We did a good preseason, we have young players in, but if we get all the players back from injury the squad is still a strong one.”

Koeman also has plenty of other issues to contend with ahead of the opening game against Real Sociedad. The Dutchman is still without several key players due to injury, while it’s still not clear if players such as Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia will be registered in time.

Manchester United’s Raphael Varane announcement delayed ‘due to image rights’

Man United's Varane announcement delayed 'due to image rights'

Raphael Varane‘s move from Real Madridto Manchester United has reportedly not yet been officially announced by the 20-time English champions due to image rights.

The Red Devils confirmed at the end of July that they had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of the France international, who could end up costing the English side in the region of £42m.

Varane is believed to have undergone a medical and signed personal terms with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side, but there has still not been an announcement, meaning that is unlikely that he will be able to feature in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Leeds United.

According to Sport Witness, the delay has been due to issues over image rights, but there is no threat to the deal, with the situation to be sorted ‘in the coming days or sooner’.

The 28-year-old, who was forced to quarantine upon his arrival from Spain earlier this month, represented France at this summer’s European Championship.

If the World Cup winner is unable to make his debut against Leeds this weekend than his first outing for Solskjaer’s side could come against Southampton in the Premier League on August 22

CHELSEA WIN THE SUPER CUP ON PENALTIES.

Chelsea 1-1 (6-5 p/k) Villarreal, UEFA Super Cup:

Chelsea FC v Villarreal CF – UEFA Super Cup 2021

Chelsea dominated the first 35-40 minutes of this game, both in terms of possession and in terms of chance creation, and duly took advantage of that domination when Kai Havertz found Hakim Ziyech with a very nice cross for the game’s opening goal just before the half-hour mark.

But then Ziyech got hurt in a seemingly innocuous collision (shoulder dislocation?) and Villarreal suddenly woke up, hitting the woodwork on either side of half-time.

The second half was a far less comfortable affair in fact, with Villarreal creating multiple dangerous opportunities and chances. Chelsea would bend, but not break … until the 73rd minute, when Gerard Moreno took advantage of a series of mistakes and giveaways at the back to kiss a chip off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

The equalizer woke Chelsea up, but neither team would find the back of the net before the 90 minutes were up, or indeed before the 120 were. Extra-time was pretty much played at a walking pace, reflective of preseason fitness levels. Christian Pulisic came closest to breaking the deadlock, but his improvised off-balance effort missed by a few inches.
